He’s bankrolled the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling, a nonprofit dedicated to outlawing the business nationwide.
He was responding to questions from Roger Gros, the publisher of Global Gaming Business, who pushed back on the casino magnate’s objections. As several states — including Nevada — have legalized online gambling, Adelson has led the organized opposition. Gros said, “You know your customer better on the Internet than you do in person” in defense of online gaming’s ability to authenticate players’ identities.
Sheldon Adelson continued his crusade against online gaming on Wednesday, passionately opposing its legalization during an appearance at a major gaming industry trade show.
Adelson, CEO of Las Vegas Sands, is arguably the loudest critical voice against legal gambling on the Internet. He made his latest remarks during a keynote discussion on the second full day of the Global Gaming Expo, or G2E.
And he made similar comments about online gaming this year, including to a crowd of UNLV students in May. “It’s like gambling: You start off at a baseline, sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down.”
“Then why don’t we legalize prostitution? Why don’t we legalize cocaine and heroin?” he asked. “That’s not a good reason, to say that they’re doing it anyway.”
Many audience members applauded in response.
Back before Macau rose to such prominence and its Cotai Strip was nonexistent, Adelson said he had a vision of making the region “Asia’s Las Vegas.” Now the area is home to Adelson’s Venetian Macau, the Wynn Macau, the MGM Macau and dozens of other casinos.
Despite declines in gambling revenue there in recent months, he made it clear that he hasn’t given up on that dream.
Adelson’s remarks should be unsurprising to those who follow the gaming industry. As he did then, Adelson told the crowd on Wednesday that he fears online gaming will exploit the poor by essentially making gambling too accessible..
Saying that “when you’re on the Internet, you cannot know your customer,” Adelson suggested that it’s easy for underage players to gamble online.
But Adelson would hear none of it, especially when it came to the idea that online gaming should be legalized because it already happens.
“I don’t want those people to get abused because when I look at people like that I see the faces of my parents,” he said, evoking his family’s lower-income background. “I just don’t see that there is any compelling reason to put an electronic casino in 318 million hands.”
Earlier in his wide-ranging conversation with Gros, Adelson spoke of his company’s success in China, where he’s helped transform Macau into an international gambling hub.
“Everything that I’ve seen happen in the last 13 years when I first was exposed to Macau is cyclical — it comes and goes,” Adelson said

The actor was banned from playing blackjack at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Casino after he was deemed “too good” at the game by security, a source confirmed to ABC News.
The Hard Rock issued a statement that read, in part, “Mr. But the casinos don’t like it because they know if you play long enough you’ll take their money.”
Oscar-winner Ben Affleck may be an A-lister, but even he can’t get away with being “too good” at blackjack.
The casino did not use the words “counting cards,” ABC News’ source said, and the Hard Rock said that it is its policy “not to comment” on guests’ gaming play.
Some reports said that Affleck allegedly was counting cards, a gambling method in which the player memorizes which type of cards have already been played and uses that knowledge to perfect his or her playing strategy. Superman,” ABC News’ source said.. It is not illegal but can get a player banned.

It’s basically a sports manifesto that looks at nine of the most important sports issues we face today and the red thread that weaves through them all, from youth sports to the pros.
Therefore, it’s up to citizens who love sport at its best to rise up and push for change. In effect, we’re a country that’s mad about spectator sports.
In fact, it is these WAAC and PAAC policies and mentalities that are the foundation of the numerous issues Reed addresses in his book, including adult-dominated youth sports; the demise of physical education and intramural sports in our schools; militaristic coaches who berate and abuse our young athletes; the lack of adequate concussion safety protocols and return-to-play guidelines throughout sports; a college sports model in which athletes’ economic and civil rights are denied; wealthy pro sports owners who hold taxpayers hostage in order to get publicly financed sports palaces built; and an ongoing lack of equal opportunity in sports for female, disabled, and LGBT athletes and administrators. It’s interesting to note that in a University of Arkansas Little Rock study, highly identified sports fans had significantly higher health risk behaviors than non-sports fans on a range of health behavior measures, including a higher body mass index (BMI) along with higher fat, fast food and alcohol consumption.
Sports are important because professional and big-time college sports basically operate as self-regulated monopolies. He points out the fallacy behind the idea that the United States is a “sports-mad country,” as many outsiders have called us. What’s left missing is a discussion regarding how to mitigate these problems. It covers the whole waterfront of sports issues and looks at how they’re all interconnected. He points out that the media will occasionally identify scandals and other symptoms of problems in the sports world but then stop. As Reed says, the dominant ideology of commercialized and professionalized sport is diffused through corporate entities, including sports media.
Clearly, sports are worthy of more serious examination than they receive in the United States today.
That’s true if for no other reason than the fact that sports absorb billions of hours of people’s time — at all ages. Also, mostly left out is any reporting of sports reform initiatives and grassroots movements designed to change sport — unless there is a major eruption or scandal that can’t be ignored.
Americans love watching sports, usually while sitting on their couches eating junk food. Reed labels his call to action “citizenship through sports activism.” He provides would-be sports reformers and activists the analytical foundation, recommendations and resources needed to improve the valuable sports experience for all stakeholders.
According to Reed, it’s ego and greed, and the win-at-all-costs (WAAC) and profit-at-all-costs (PAAC) policies and mentalities whose vices have spawned throughout the world of sports.
Let’s hope that a significant number of sports fans — including concerned parents of young athletes — take Reed’s lead and start debating and discussing these issues in their communities.
While sports started as a form of play, recreation, and fun for family and friends, they have increasingly become commercialized and professionalized spectacles, at all levels (See: Little League World Series). And there are a few books on specific sports issues like concussions and taxpayer-financed stadiums and arenas.
Nevertheless, controversial sports problems and abuses haven’t received the persistent, timely attention they deserve, including the development of well-conceived remedies for the games’ ills.
Sports are also important because they have become a multibillion-dollar industry, one of the 10 biggest industries in the country. The result is that our games suffer from a general soul sickness, resulting in problems that are zapping the human spirit out of the games we love at their best.
There are plenty of books on the market about each of our most popular sports — football, basketball, baseball, hockey, tennis, golf, etc. Whatever you think about sports, they’re clearly important for that reason alone.
Until now.. Ken Reed, a former college athlete, coach, longtime sports marketer, sports management instructor and sports issues columnist, and now the sports policy director for our League of Fans (see leagueoffans.org), is unlike any other sports book I’ve seen.
Finally, sports are important because sports ethos, mentalities and policies impact, in one way or another, virtually all aspects of our society.
He also identifies where people are already fighting for needed change around the country.
And what is that red thread?
Click here for more information on How We Can Save Sports: A Game Plan.
It’s time for a grand-slam look at the entire sports scene.
But Reed’s book is different. The list goes on.
Reed also takes a jab at the sports media. Our sports pages should really be renamed “Spectator Sports,” because that’s all they cover. There are numerous books that profile our well-known sports figures. That makes it much bigger than the U.S. According to Plunkett Research, the estimated size of the entire sports industry in 2012 was $435 billion. That creates problems that filter all the way down to sports at the high school and youth levels.
Make no mistake about it: Sports are important.
How We Can Save Sports: A Game Plan, by Dr. They have nothing to do with community participatory sports.
Why? Because sports media corporations, and most sports journalists, have too much invested, economically and psychologically, in the current system to push for significant change. auto industry, movie industry and many others.
That’s good news, because sports can be a healthy sociocultural practice of much value when win-at-all-costs and profit-at-all-costs thinking aren’t driving the bus.
One issue that Reed addresses in his book really hits home with me
The Crimson Tide squeaked by Arkansas 14-13 Saturday thanks to a blocked extra point, but failed to cover and dropped to 3-11 ATS after a straight-up loss under coach Nick Saban.
San Diego Chargers (-7.5) 31, Oakland Raiders 28: In addition to the Cowboys’ upset of the Seahawks, the Chargers’ failing to cover as big road favorites against the Raiders was one of the best results of the day for the sports book.
o Baylor trailed TCU 58-37 with 11:38 left in the fourth quarter Saturday. 15 and at Ole Miss on Nov. “Small bets, average size is about 25 bucks.”
Odds and ends
o Auburn’s dramatic win over Alabama last season has had a lasting effect on the Crimson Tide. The line was sitting at FSU minus-11.5 at most shops Monday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–July 10, 2005–The Spring Meet at Churchill Downs, its first race meet since the completion of its ambitious $121 million renovation, ended its 52-day run on Sunday with double-digit gains in on-track attendance and wagering, but a slight decline in off-track betting.
Meet highlights included a spectacular renewal of the Kentucky Derby that attracted the second largest crowd in its history and saw the “Run for the Roses” become the first in U.S. history to attract more than $100 million in wagering on a single race. Total betting on the Derby’s 12-race program rose to a North American record of $155,133,631, an increase of nine percent from the previous daily racing record of $142,848,289 established on Derby Day 2004. Kentucky Derby Day also established a North American record for wagering on a racing day and the Kentucky Oaks smashed its record for all-time attendance.
The historic racetrack’s new areas and its increased emphasis on guest service throughout the facility helped boost its on-track performance, but its overall results continued to reflect the expansion of gaming competition in its region and competition for horses from tracks in racing states with purses that continue to be bolstered by slot machine revenues and other expanded gaming. More than 90 horses were affected by that quarantine and kept out of competition for nearly a month.
Among the factors that contributed to the declines in off-track and total wagering was a drop in the average number of betting interests per race during the Spring Meet. More racetracks in racing states such as New York and Pennsylvania will boost their purses and improve their racing product through slot revenues in the coming months. On-track wagering topped the $12 million mark for the first time and total wagering on the Oaks Day racing card topped $31 million.

Wagering on the Derby itself totaled $103,325,518, marking the first time that more than $100 million had been wagered on a single race in North America. A crowd of 156,435 gathered for the first Derby held in the renovated Churchill Downs – the second largest attendance figure in the history of America’s greatest race – and saw Mr. And our daily racing program faces increasing pressure from competition for horses from states such as West Virginia, which has sent its race purses boosted significantly from revenues from expanded gambling and slot machines. “We are excited about the public response to our new amenities and improved service, and we deeply appreciate the efforts of our Churchill Downs team, which worked non-stop for weeks to get the track ready for its public unveiling during Kentucky Derby Week and maintained that high level of performance throughout the meet.
“Although the meet’s on-track results were encouraging and gratifying, they could have been even better if not for the increasing competitive pressures from a continued expansion of gambling in our market and throughout the region,” continued Sexton. 30-Nov. “Churchill Downs’ first racing meet in its completely renovated facility will be memorable for many things, but mostly for the smiles on the faces of patrons who enjoyed our new facilities and the top level guest service provided in our new racetrack,” said Steve Sexton, president of Churchill Downs. An average of $1,845,704 was wagered on-track each day, a rise of 12.1 percent from the daily average of $1,645,970 in 2004. and Mrs. A similar quarantine in Florida affected a number of Kentucky-based horses as it limited their training and delayed their departure for Kentucky. Located in Louisville, the flagship racetrack of Churchill Downs Incorporated (Nasdaq: CHDN) also operates Trackside Louisville, an off-track betting and training facility. Information about Churchill Downs can be found on the Internet at www.churchilldowns.com.
Total wagering for the 2005 Churchill Downs Spring Meet included a record-smashing 131st renewal of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 7. “Casino competition, present in our market since late 1998, continues to grow and mature. The meet’s average daily attendance rose to 13,813, a jump of 15.5 percent from last year’s figure of 11,955.
. Purses paid during the meet totaled $25,164,885, an increase of 2.9 percent over the 2004 total of $24,463,392. Field sizes declined slightly during the meet, a concern that can be partly attributed to the increased competition for horses.
The decline in off-track wagering contributed to a drop in total wagering on Churchill Downs races during the spring session. Those developments will only intensify the competition for horses, so the size of our race fields looms as a long-term competitive concern.”
Churchill Downs, the world’s most legendary racetrack, has conducted Thoroughbred racing and presented America’s greatest race, the Kentucky Derby, continuously since 1875. On-track wagering on the 12-race Derby Day program rose by 22 percent to $22,117,166, which eclipsed a record established in 2003. Total wagering for the meet – which includes on-track betting and all money wagered at off-track sites and simulcast centers – stood at $585,197,340 after the meet’s 52 days. The racetrack’s 2005 Fall Meet is scheduled for Oct. The daily average for total betting in the just-completed meet stood at $11,253,795, which reflected a small increase of .01 percent from the 2004 average of $11,252,299.
On-track wagering and attendance, both of which declined in a 53-day meet in 2004 that was hindered by construction of the track’s new clubhouse, rebounded strongly in this year’s session. Sections of two barns at Trackside Louisville training center were quarantined for the equine bacterial disease known as strangles in March. The Spring Meet attendance total rose to 718,270, an increase of 13.4 percent from last year’s total of 633,616. Average daily off-track wagering in 2005 stood at $9,408,091, a decline of 2.1 percent from the 2004 average of $9,606,329.
Race purses for the 2005 Spring Meet rose slightly from the year before. This year’s decline occurred as competition for horses intensified with racetracks in racing states that offer race purses supplemented by revenues from slot machines and other alternative gaming.
While on-track wagering registered healthy increases, off-track betting declined and contributed to a small decrease in daily averages for total wagering during the meet. Daily purses averaged $483,940 – an increase of 4.9% percent from last year’s average of $461,573. On-track wagering for this year’s 52-day session totaled $95,976,633, an increase of 10 percent from last year’s total of $87,236,407. Churchill Downs will conduct the 132nd running of the Kentucky Derby on May 6, 2006
So basically, the morning line is someone’s estimate of what each horse’s closing odds will be. That because in the parimutuel system the odds are determined by the betting pool. It also could be someone’s opinion of what they think each horse’s chances should be. The morning line odds are the probable betting odds as estimated by a bookmaker or track handicapper, usually issued the morning of the race, before wagering begins. In this system if you make your bet on horse number 8 when the tote-board says the odds are 8-5 you are not guaranteed to get that payout, the odds will rise and fall prior to the running of the race when the pools are closed.
Note: Parimutuel is a form of betting and of handling the betting on horse races at racetracks, in which those holding winning tickets divide the total amount bet in proportion to their wagers, less a percentage for the management, taxes, etc.
. For example if the morning line on a particular horse is let say 8-5, that could change it’s never set
